View Full Version : What is wrong with me?!

For some reason I'm embarrassed to buy tampons. :o I know that everyone needs them (well, women, that is :p), and there's no reason at all to feel freaked out, but I always am. I have to always stack the other things I'm buying on top of them, and once when I was at Walmart I grabbed a random shirt off the rack that I had no intention of buying, just to put over them until I got to the register so no one would see them in my cart.
What the hell is wrong with me, and how do I get over this?!

Oh wow. I never have been embarrassed. I used to hold my pads right in front of me at the grocery store. I've never been ashamed of that.

I used to feel exactly the same way when I used to buy pads or tampons as a teenager. I was seriously so embarassed about buying them, that I'd usually ask my mom to get them for me.
Nowadays though I don't really care anymore, since I've come to terms with the fact that I'm not the only one buying them.

I definitely do that too to some extent, don't feel bad! If it was an all female store it would be one thing but I know lots of guys get eh about it (stupid as it is). I also don't want to be holding tampons and have a little boy ask his mom what they are.

tampons, condoms, pregnancy tests...
(funny story actually, I've had so many friends that send me instead! haha).
nothing phases me anymore..

sometimes you just have to do it a few times before it stops bugging you.
Just dress cute and get to it Miss Stef.
Worst case scenario someone looks at you...
but they probably just think you're a hawtie.

It doesn't bother me.
It's the having to get the 'just in case it might be possible that I could be pregnant' pregnancy test that always gets me  Since I don't really look old enough to be married and all that...I always feel like people think I'm this young unmarried hoochie who can't keep her legs closed and it just screams...hey I've been having unprotected sex
I should get over it...I'm married and will be starting a family in the near future lol

I don't feel strange about getting any of these things unless I go to a chemist. For some reason every pharmacy assistant in Sydney needs to stalk your every move in the shop. It's a bit unnerving.
I wouldn't worry about it too much. I don't know about anyone else but I pay no attention to what's in people's baskets and trolleys at the supermarket.
I actually tend to feel more embarassed about walking out of the store with a 12 pack of toilet paper under my arm.

LOL, that's how I feel when I go to get my birth control rx refilled, even now. At one point, I used to (boy, this is dumb to admit) switch one of my rings over to my left ring finger when I was at the counter. Talk about Catholic guilt :)
Though like Topaz said, I probably hate buying TP even moreso. I just can't pass up a good 2/$11 sale....but then I just *know* people are looking at me in amazement, wondering, "what can that one little woman possibly do with 48 rolls of Charmin?" hahaha...

Katie-LOL that cracked me up so much! I get the 'Catholic guilt' too.
I don't love buying tampons or liners, but I've gotten used to it. I just try to get to the checkout as quickly as I can.

I kind of hide them too sometimes. It depends on the day I guess as to how self conscious I feel. Of course it doesn't help when it seems like EVERY person you pass in the store is looking at you and your tampax box. lol I think the reason why I get self conscious about it is that I usually don't buy tampons until I'm on my period. I don't know if that's when the rest of you buy them, but I never check my tampon stock until I start.

I used to be so embarassed when I was a teen and made my mom or friend buy them for me. When I did work up the nerve I would only go to a woman cashier. I also bought lots to stockpile. Eventually I just got over it but still went to a woman cashier. Now it doesnt matter as I use cloth pads. You might try The Divacup or Sea Sponges so you dont have to buy tampons again. www.lunapads.com

Me too. It's like a, "HAY EVERYONE! I'm on the rag, doncha know!" feeling that can be very embarrassing at times.
I don't even know why I feel self conscious about it - I use o.b. tampons, and the box for them is not much bigger than your average Tylenol box - you can completely block the label with your hand, and as far as anyone else can tell, you just have some kind of blue box in your hands. I'm starting to get used to it, though, since I don't really have a choice in the matter about it. XDD

Nothing is wrong with you! LOL. I know someone who gets embarassed about buying toilet paper. Now, that's a little wierd to me. :p I don't get embrassed though.

I totally feel like an idiot carrying a giant carton of tp through Target...I don't know why...its weird. Its such a large item if you buy it in the 24+ roll pack its kind of overwhelms you carrying it to the counter. Tampons never really bothered me though. I use to make an ex-boyfriend buy them for me occasionally just to watch him squirm...it was hilarious.

I've never been afraid/embarrassed to buy them, but I am VERY afraid of who I will run into while in the store (like my boss or something) with it in my cart.
Yeah, I'm notorious for covering up the intimate items based on who I'll see.

I think that I was never embarrassed by this because I have experience other things that were so much more humiliating. Seriously, I once got checked out by a guy from high school working at the checkout counter and I was buying a box of pantyliners. Didn't phase me.
I have been much more humiliated when I would get accidents at school and I would have to walk around with blood-stained jeans. You see I had terribly heavy periods when I was younger and my mom forbade me to use tampons. I tried the pads with wings but I would get flooding and it wouldn't catch everything and poured over the sides onto my jeans. One time in middle school I got a box of freebies from companies wanting to give away samples of personal care products and I got some tampons. I tried them and I was hooked. So I started going around my mother's back and using tampons. I didn't care if anyone at the store saw me buying them-I was so freakin' happy!
