I have a cyst on my scalp that I have had for 12 or 13 years now and I asked the Dr. about it when I first found it and she said it was nothing to worry about, as far as my health was concerned. But it has always bugged me and I want to finally get it removed. I don't have insurance so I don't really want to waste my money going to my regular Dr. just to get a referral. Anyone know what kind of Dr. you are supposed to go to for this? Any help would be appreciated, Thanks :)

Hi SilverAngel! About ten years back, I also had a cyst mysteriously appear on my scalp. It was right above the hairline, so nobody could really see it, but it really began to bother me about two years back(I was always afraid when the lady at the hair salon would scratch it open by accident) :O

I first went to my usual doctor(a general practioner), and she referred me to a dermatologist. The dermatologist was able to remove, even if it meant shaving a tiny bit of my hair off. Once the cyst was out though, he shipped off to have it analyzed to make sure it really was just a benign cyst and nothing else.(Everything was OK!)

It was a pretty quick procedure though, and I'm happy now that I no longer have that creepy little thing on my head. :)

I agree. You need to see a dermatologist who does in-office procedures. Many Dr's now will offer payment plans for those without insurance or for people who want cosmetic procedures. Ask!

I had the exact same thing - I was born with a cyst on my scalp and had it surgically removed when I was 12 or 13. I had it removed by a dermatologist, no hospital visit required.

Thanks guys! I have some questions for those of you who have had this done. How much hair do they take off? I have very long hair and I'm worried about this. Do they just take enough to make the incision or shave off the entire cyst? Also did your hair grow back where the scar was? I've been reading about it and have seen that some Dr's just remove a tiny bit to make the incision and then remove some fluid and then pull it out through the small incision area. That's what I'm hoping will happen. I really don't want a bald spot that is noticeable! Thanks for your help with my questions :)

Well in my case since the cyst was close to the hairline, he shaved off the hair directly on it.

It was such a small amount of hair though, and such small stitches, that nobody was aware that I even had anything done. ;)

The hair has completely grown back over the spot though, so everything is back to normal :)
