Someone made that comment to me the other day so I'm wondering if any of you have ever heard it. Or if there's anything to it?

I only heard that if you color your hair often and drastically (ie. blonde to black to red head, etc).

I've heard the same thing. My hair is naturally black & i dyed it a dark blond & my hair significantly thinned out. I also relaxed so it prob. was over processed.

I have since dyed it back to my natural haircolor & stopped relaxing it. I miss my thick hair! :(

Yep- I have heard of this and know people who has had this happen to them. It only really happens if you color your have too much or use really strong chemicals ( like bleaching your hair and your hair isn't strong enough to take the chemicals. )

I had dyed my hair a very dark brown and after a couple months, I wanted to go back to blonde. They over-bleached it by a lot and for months I experienced excessive breakage. Luckily, my hair is very very thick to start out with so it's not like I could really tell I was losing hair. In the end, I got a very short Victoria Beckham-esque haircut to get rid of all the damaged bits.

I used to color my hair ALL the time, and I never noticed that I was actually losing hair, but it did break a lot and was very dry.

I used to have my colored light blonde by someone who knew what she was doing. After a while, I had to change colorists...she was 2.5 hr drive away & cost was about $250...but it was AWESOME. I went locally & after 1 color session, chunks started falling out because her methods were harsh.

I finally found my current local stylist who's awesome & haven't had problems since when I've had it bleached.

I believe the single factor from the girl who fried my hair tried to get the whole process done as quickly as she could with a lot of heat beginning to end. The good colorists didn't heat at all...or very occasionally would only spot heat for very short times when something wasn't bleaching out evenly.

There's a big difference between hair loss at the scalp and loss caused by breakage. Most of the girls here are talking about the latter. Most people experience breakage immediately after or in the months after a coloring session. At one point (because I had overprocessed with 40 volume bleach) my hair broke off about 8 inches from the ends. It took 2 years to grow it back out.

It take years of harsh coloring to fall out of your scalp, but it does happen. I know a lady about 45 who is almost completely bald because she had bleached and permed her hair religiously for 20 years.
