View Full Version : So I chopped my hair off...

My hair was about armpit length until an hour ago. The ends were seeming unhealthy to me, and I wasn't able to style it to make it look good without a curling iron, so I made the decision to cut.
I was thinking Kate Bosworth bob. I got mommy bob. There is no layering which means it's a bit heavy at my already heavy jaw. Needless to say.... I'm nooot thrilled and not thrilled with the stylist who didn't listen or follow through (we'd discussed undercutting it).
Any words of wisdom on how to rock this haircut? It's less modern, cute, classic and more soccer mom. I'll post pictures when I get some b@ll$ to own up to my impulsivity.

texturizing products will be your best friend :)

This occasionally happens to me when I ask for my hair short. No matter how many pictures I bring in, the stylist tends to give me a blah, all one length bob parted in the middle. Grr....they don't understand how to cut fine hair.
I recommend texturizing products too...Kenra Texturizing Taffy is a great one. I use headbands and flip the ends out with the taffy or pull it back in a tiny ponytail tail and let the excess hang free.
I also will wear interesting earrings or play up my makeup a little bit so the focus is less on my hair.

oh and zig-zag part it down the middle or to one side.
use rat tail comb (or a pen if it's handy) and draw zig-zag through hair, lift and segment to either side. use little gemstone clips to secure if it won't stay by itself.

Katie Holmes-type bob? If so, I think that that look is incredible, FWIW! So very sleek and sophisticated (though I totally understand being angry with a stylist who ignores your request!)!
Show us pix! I'll bet it's not half as bad as you think it is (plus, you're gorgeous ... anything would work on you!)!

If you're really unhappy, go back! She can maybe do some sleek layering for you so it won't be so heavy. Don't feel hesitant to go back; you should be happy with your hair.

If you've already lived with it a few days and still don't like it I definately say go back. They shouldn't charge you to re-cut it or add a few layers.
I think what's really cute is a bob that is a little bit longer in the front than in the back and kind of choppy more than blunt. I am not talking Posh Spice angles(too short) but a swingy, longer look.
Actually, I am describing the cut I have and this look in various forms seems pretty popular in my area but not overly so. I travel into New York every month or so and I first really noticed it there this summer. I agree with you that a one length bob just doesn't cut it, it's got to be texturized and varying in length.
(You are so young and cute though, I'm sure it looks fine on you! Just scrunch it up a little with some product!!)

I bet some layers would really jazz it up! I also think texturizing products are great. I love that "piece-y" look.

I'm sorry to hear that. I totally understand what you mean about stylists not listening to you! I hate that. My best stylist moved to Ireland and ever since I've been unahppy with everyone I went to :( I agree with the recs for texturizing products.

I know exactly what you are saying! Every once in a while my stylist does this to me. I need a lot cut out/thinned from inside...keeping the outermost length there & intact...and cutting out from hidden underneath.
My guy is very good, but when he cuts up the bottom & doesn't make underlayers for shape & thinning...it's a triangle bob. I TOTALLY understand your mommy bob.
Personally, I just let it go until next time & just accept the fact that it will be better the next cut. He will get it right the next time because he will see for himself the triangle effect...plus, that will be the focal point of what I want to see changed.
Since you just got it done and you're asking how to rock the cut, I would call and set an appointment for her to thin it out...or whatever the proper fix is. If it falls into the mom category...I don't think you really can rock it without a lot of frustration & product.

That sucks, ScottyBabe! I've been there, and it's way too easy for stylists to turn an idea for a sexy bob into a soccer mom cut. I would definitely go and get it fixed. Like Gayle said, I think it's going to be very frustrating if you don't.

Oooh, I know what you mean. A few years ago I went in and asked for light layering just around my face. I ended up with "The Rachel" cut -- not good with my strong jaw, and absolutely not what I was looking for. I tried make it work for a few days, but eventually went back and had it fixed. Sometimes new haircuts just take some time to get used to, but if that's not it, I'd go back in!
