View Full Version : Is it hard for you to find clothes that fit?

I have trouble finding dresses and pants that actually fit. I have a big butt LOL and a small waist. So I have to buy pants that are a size up in order to get my butt in. But then it's too big on my waist. I wish clothes were also made for women that are rather small. I find that clothes are made like one size fits all. We are all different shapes and different sizes.

Yes, its really hard for me sometimes. I have an odd body type. I'm short (5'2"), petite (size 2-4) and have a larger chest (34D). The hardest is dresses, it seems like they're all made for girls with smaller chests.

I sometimes have a hard time finding shirts that are long enough. I have a really long torso and I have to be careful to airdry everything so it won't shrink... However I hope the tunic trend sticks around for a long, long time because its been much easier in recent years to find longer shirts!

Yep. Definitely have a hard time. I'm petite and you'd be surprised how hard it is to find stuff that fit properly. It's pretty limited selection and most of the "petite" clothing out there are very old lady-like. I'm also on the smaller end of the spectrum, between petite 0 and 2 (but with vanity sizing nowadays who knows) so that limits me more. A lot of places don't have 0-2 available so the smallest they have is usually too big for me. I've ordered xs petite before online (and yes, a lot of times petite sizes are available only online!) and they were like 2 sizes too big. It sucks. Don't even let me get started on bras!

I wish I had more stuff to choose from, but I guess it just makes shopping go faster since I can only shop at petites and if I don't find anything in the one or two racks that are available, I move on. Over the years I've learned which places have stuff that would fit me, so I only go where I know I have better chances. Oh, and contrary to what people say about "you can always get it altered"...um, no you can't. Sometimes it's a LOT of work to alter certain things and alteration bills quickly add up.

Shirts are really easy. Small or X-small.

Pants are really hard since I'm short. My waist is small but I'm curvy on my hips and butt.

Most dresses fit but I have a small chest and certain styles that I like don't fit.

I feel your pain...I'm 5'1" and a 36D. It is hard shopping for clothes sometimes!

*Sometimes* I have a hard time finding shirts/jackets/sweaters that fit because I have a long torso, but overall, I'm pretty well-proportioned so it's not too difficult. It's somewhat hard to find things I LIKE because I'm picky, but that's a whole other issue. :p

The only times I really have problems are if I try to shop in juniors stores. Most of their things seem to be for girls that have absolutely no curves anywhere, which is definitely not me, LOL, so they never work. Lately I'm finding a lot of juniors stuff too childish, though, so I don't really shop at those stores anymore.

It sounds like you're growing out of juniors sizes, Stefani. I gave up on juniors a few years ago. You reach a point where everything just looks too childish. There are actually a lot of fun styles in the Misses departments that are based on the juniors trends but more sophisticated.

Since I grew out of juniors sizes a few years ago, shopping has been much easier. I'm a size small in tops, sometimes a medium depending on the brand but it's rare. I buy all of my pants (both dress pants and jeans) at Express, New York and Company and (sometimes) Kohl's and I'm the same size at each store. I shop where I know the clothes fit my body type. I'm 5'5", about 145 pounds (but determined to lose weight before June) and I'm curvy down below (thighs and butt) with a tiny waist. I always have to wear a belt with my jeans.

Yep. I'm short (5' 1 1/2"), chubby (I'm built rather like a hobbit, unfortunately), with a very average-sized chest (38B). This is apparently a weird combination. If I can find something that fits my hips and waist, it will be way too long for me. If I find something that can cover my stomach, it will be just a bit too big in the chest region. Likewise, if I can find something that fits my chest, it will be very, very form-fitting, and sometimes, it can be a bit uncomfortable for me. :/ I'm debating whether or not I should start looking into plus-sizes (I'm between a 13 and 15 / L - XL, mattering on the brand - I'm an inbetweenie, sometimes just a little too big to wear clothes in the normal range, but also just a little too small to wear clothes from plus-sizes too) to see if I can find something that's a bit more flattering. :/ I'll be the smallest size in those stores, no guarentee I'll find anything there, either.

Definitely!! I'm super short, so pants and jeans are hard to find, unless they're the capri/cropped ones. Junior pants/jeans sizes fit me best, but they're always long. Petite pants/jeans sizes don't fit me right, they're too big at the butt and thighs.

I'm chubby, so it's hard to find clothes that don't accentuate my middle area. Pants might fit at the stomach cause they're a larger size, but then they're big everywhere else. And tops will fit me fine, but are snug around the stomach. And of course tops are always too long in length as well as the sleeves.

I'm blessed that my mom can tailor all of my clothes, so that the lengths of tops and bottoms are fine.

I wouldn't say it's hard...but it can be frustrating at times. I'm already aware of my body parts that are somewhat "off"...my shoulders are quite wide, and my torso is long...so many times I can tell before I even try something on whether it will be long enough or whether the shoulders won't suit me. If it's not for my body type, I don't waste my time.

I try not to fall in love with anything at the rack. I have to try on before I decide whether I like it or not. This saves a lot of heartache too.

Shoumi, I feel your pain! I have a very petite frame (5'2" and really skinny) but I have a large chest (32D). Not only do few stores carry 32D bras-I guess it's unusual to have such a small band size and such a large cup size-but my chest makes it very difficult to find shirts and dresses that fit. I am a true XS everywhere but my chest, and I hate sizing up. Pants are pretty difficult too because my inseam is so short, but I've found a few stores with good 'short' options.

I'm extrememly petite & it seems like w/ all this vanity sizing companies are doing I'm having a harder and harder time finding clothes :( EVERYTHING I buy has to be altered. I'm a 23 in pants, XS in tops. Good times w/ the clothes shopping!

I don't have many problems finding tops, jackets, and blazers that fit, but it's a "challenge" to find bottoms that fit. I am 6 feet tall, so finding pants, skirts, and dresses that are long enough isn't easy. Plus, I am also slim, so it isn't easy finding bottoms that are both long enough and small enough. A lot of tall clothes are cut kind of big. People are sometimes surprised that tall, slim people have trouble finding clothes that fit because they think clothes are made to favor us, but we do. Clothes are cut so wacky and inconsistently these days that more and more people are having this problem.

It's a good thing I've found some places that sell clothes - and stylish clothes too, thank goodness - for women 6 feet and over, but still I sometimes have to have things tailored / taken in. It's a pain to buy something and then have to wait and pay to have them tailored, but it's worth it because afterwards my clothes fit me perfectly.

For me it's hardest to find bras that fit. I've always had a large chest and for some odd reason I gain weight there first but lose it there last (if at all:() so as I lose I go up in cup size. I'm currently a g cup (maybe even bigger since the last bra I got was a bit small cup wise:eek:) so it's almost impossible to find a bra that works with tops that aren't turtlenecks;) What sucks more is that because of my scarring I can't do any bra with underwires or they cause horrible pain after an hour tops and it's harder still to find one that size without wires.

It's not too hard to find tops except button up tops (if they're big enough for my chest they're too big everywhere else) but if my top is too clingy I look like I'm smuggling in cantaloupes;)

Dresses can be hard because of my chest too but not quite as hard. Pants are fairly easy. I'm short but not so short petite lengths wont fit (I'm 5'2") and not too tall for them either. Long skirts and dresses do pose a problem though since it's harder to find those in petite length.

Yeah, I definitely think I am. I'm on a New York & Company kick lately--I think their stuff is cute and still young-looking, but not teenybopper-ish like some of the juniors stores.

New York and Company is my favorite store! Yes, the clothes are still youthful yet sophisticated and not childish. They have so many great sales too, and the prices are reasonable. I have a gift card so I'm going there tomorrow. :p

Sam, have you considered having button-up shirts tailored? You can find the size that will fit your chest and get the rest of the shirt tailored to better fit the rest of your body. You could buy the shirt, keep the tags on, and then take it to a tailor to see if tailoring is doable and find out the cost. If it's doable, you can leave it to be tailored, or otherwise just return the shirt.

I hate clothes shopping b/c I have such a hard time finding things that I like that fit how I want them too. Shirts that are long enough...b/c I have a long torso...although the styles lately have been good to me.

I hate shopping for jeans. Most places seem to think that women like to show off their ass crack or the other extreme..mom jeans..there doesn't seem to be a happy medium at a lot of places.

My only problem is that not enough stores carry smaller or petite sizes these days.

Luckily I landed a job at a store that specializes in business clothing for petite women (and carries regular sizes as well).
