View Full Version : Hair losing thickness?

I've always had very thick curly hair. I guess about 2 years ago I started getting more layers while getting my hair razored to take out the thickness so it's a bit thinner from that. I also got my hair dyed super blonde for the first time in August of 2006, then root touch-ups every 2 months since then. The last time I got my hair colored was early July 2007. I had the brown lowlights put in.
I'm trying to remember when I first noticed a change. It was probably a few weeks after coming back from California so like late August. I went and got my usual trim at the salon. Then ever since that I noticed individuals hairs falling out more frequently. I assumed it was some kind of summer shedding.
I've been on birth control pills for almost 2 years now. I heard that can cause it. I was taking Ortho-tri cyclen Lo for the longest time then for some reason my doctor switched it and now I take Tri-Sprintec. So I started that maybe around September. I'm also on my 3rd round of Accutane. I heard that it can cause hair loss but I never experienced it the other 2 times. I looked at the pictures online and the people on Accutane are actually balding. Mine just

I'm not stressed at all. I'm actually very calm. I don't exercise as much and eat as healthy as I used to though. I wear my hair up in ponytails at home sometimes. I have long layers and bangs and that's the part I've noticed getting thinner. It kinda has this "fluffy" look only in that area. My brother is 2 years older than me and his hair appears to be getting thinner in the same area. His scalp is visible though. Could it be genetics or just getting older? My roots have been growing out for 6 months so they look much darker than the ends. I wonder if it's an illusion to-maybe the darker hair makes it seem thinner than when it was all blonde.

I'm not sure what to think. Cause I was looking at my Lerners Permit picture taken in July and my hair looks so much fuller and thicker, now it just kinda falls against my head.:(

Does anyone have any thoughts or think it could be something more serious? I hear thyroid problems can cause this.

Thanks.:)

I had bad acne for years and took Accutane when I was 13-14 (one round). My hair is not as thick as it used to be, and I'm not sure if this was because of puberty or because of Accutane. Once I hit 14 or so, my hair seemed thinner and curlier, and adolescence is a prime time for hair changes to occur. It had always been medium; not thick, not thin, and wavy. I have enough hair, but I'd like it to be a little thicker lol -I've had decent skin since I was 14 though, so maybe that's the trade off.

I wonder if maybe it might be Accutane for you? Three rounds might be enough for you to start noticing some of the negative side effects the drug can have. I also think that genetics play a huge part in a lot of things. I noticed my first grey hair at 20; at 22, I randomly pluck one out here and there. My mom started greying at 23. I also have a tiny, tiny wrinkle in the left corner of my mouth -this is where my mom noticed her first line. It's strange. Since you've noticed your brother's hair thinning in the same pattern yours is, maybe it is hereditary.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help. :p

I'm not any help to you, because I'm going thru the same thing and I haven't figured out what to do. I had a major shed back in the Fall, and while they're not falling out at the rate it was then I'm still losing faster than it's growing. I'm pretty peeved about it. I'm one of those people who my hair was basically the only thing I felt was beautiful about me, and now it's disappearing. I had my last driver's license picture taken right before then, and you can tell how much thicker it is in that pic.

Like you, I've also noticed it's more obvious around my bangs. Like where they separate from the rest of my hair is more noticeable than ever, but it also look thinner around the edges when I pull my hair back.

I have GOT to get more regular with my hair vitamins and see if that helps! I've been slacking on that lately. And now that I think about it, that might very well be why it was so thick a few months ago. That and I was eating a lot cleaner and more protein over the Summer. Hmmmmmm......

My hair shed a TON 2 summers ago due to stress & ED issues :( It's coming back in slowly (I have lots of baby hairs lol), but I doubt it will be as thick as it once was. My hair was so full & thick before, & while it's not thin by any means now, I can tell a difference. Take some hair vitamins & be sure to eat lots of protein - also check your stress levels. HTHS!

I've noticed my hair change over the years-I feel like now it's not as thick as it used to be. However, I like it (LOL) because my hair used to be plain frizzy and now it's smooth and perfect. I do think age can change hair texture and consistency-one of my friends had poker-straight hair as a child and during high school it changed to being super-duper curly (like corkscrew curls). Definitely ask your stylist if you're concerned, but the Accutane sounds like it could be the reasonl

I don't think I can offer help, but I have a similar story. I was on Yasmin B.C for almost 2 years and I noticed within the last year a lot of hair falling out in globs, as well as my hair losing some thickness. My hair is definitely thinner in one pretty decent size on my scalp (the hair is not likely to re-grow in that much more) but it was due to Yasmin. Since I stopped taking it (a good 3-4 months now), I've been using a good protein shampoo and conditioner (Redken Extreme in the blue bottles). I also got 2 good trims within the last 4 months and within the month,I just recently re-colored my hair again. My hair is not falling out as much. :D

Go to a doctor though. I hope it's as simple as Accutane or your B.C

maybe Accutane or BCP but it's probably just aging, my hair is not as thick as it used to be 5 years ago, that's for sure...:(

I definitely think it's the Accutane. I stopped taking it over a week ago and the shedding stopped. Even my eyelashes were falling out quite frequently.

I started up with vitamins again so I'll see what happens.

Aging? NO way...you are not "aging" yet...I'm 45 and THAT'S AGING! It's probably from the pill or other medications, but unless you look WAAAAAY younger than you are, aging is not a factor! Aging is when you get into your 40s or 50s+!

We're not saying she's aging lol, just that getting older does change hair. Heck, my friend's hair I mentioned changed in high school!

Hehe...I think my little wrinkle and grey hairs prove I'm aging lol. And I'M only 22! *cries* ;)
