Yesterday I decided to take my parakeets(Tacorico and Belladonna) out of their cage, and let them roam around the living room. The main reason for this was because I wanted to rinse their cage out with a hose.

Well as soon as I put them down on the ground(a few feet away), they raced back towards the cage! Tacorico circled it several times while squawking and flapping his wings. Belladonna climbed up the side of the cage and just squawked she tried to find her way back inside.

I guess that both parakeets were probably afraid to be outside of their cage. Then again they haven't had many opportunities to do so. When I was younger, I had another parakeet who I would play with very often. Therefore it was not only finger tame, but it enjoyed watching television while perched on a coat hanger.

I am thinking of getting them one of those little parakeet "activity centers" that pet shops sell, and placing it near the cage. Maybe that would make them feel a bit more comfortable. Does this sound like a good idea?

If they like their cage, then I don't see a problem...but it would be cute to get a whole activity center!
