View Full Version : Oh My Poor Throat!

Well I don't know if it's the end of semester stress, recent crazy temperature changes, or what, but I've got a cold and killer sore throat :(
I mean my throat is so inflammed right now, that it feels as if though I'm swallowing glass! I've also lost my sense of taste and smell, which pretty much makes eating unappealing. So I didn't bother having anything this morning, except for a few sips of water.
The awful thing though is that my tummy was growling like an angry lion! I mean I was absolutely starving, but the fear of pain kept me from eating. Well after nearly passing out from hunger(around 3pm), I broke down, and headed to the El Pollo Loco on campus. Luckily they have chicken tortilla soup, so I bought a small bowl. Well lets just say that thanks to the pain, it took me 30 minutes to eat a 10 ounce bowl of chicken soup!
While I'm full for now, I'm absolutely dreading the next time I get hungry. I mean what on Earth can I possibly eat that won't hurt my throat? Any suggestions?

Have you tried those meal replacement drinks like Ensure or Boost? I tried one the other week after a two day headache so I wasn't able to go out for food. I was ravenous to the point of weakness but luckily my mum being the nag she is made me take some a few weeks back even though I dont like the stuff.
Well, it really helped my hunger entirely. I couldn't believe a drink really filled me up like that.
I do think though you are better off having a big pot of chicken soup on hand but the drinks will do in a pinch.

Aww I'm sorry your throat hurts. Just an FYI, milk is not good to drink when you have a sore throat. It coats your throat and makes it even harder to swallow. Umm.. as for what to eat I would say maybe cold, pureed soups like gazpacho. Mashed potatoes would be good too I would think, or maybe scrambled eggs. Definitely take some ibuprofen to help with pain and try using one of those throat sprays, like the one from Chloriseptic. Throat lozenges never work, at least IMHO.

These drinks are lactose free so I didn't notice a problem with any coating and I dont drink milk for that reason. I agree though that milk is bad for coating your throat.

Maybe you should be eating antibiotics. It sounds like you've got an inflamed strep - a bacterial infection, easily treatable with antiobiotics, that can spread like lightening if left untreated and cause some serious problems.
Get thee to a doctor, fast!

You could always buy the Soup at Hands...all the stuff in the soups are tiny (like chicken bits, noodles, etc) so I bet you could handle it.
What you have is spreading around my campus like nuts! I'm praying I don't get it.

Oh Hun that's dreadful sounding.
Have you tried drinking very cold juice with your meal,
I always found that soothed my throat enough to get through it when I was sick and having trouble eating.
I agree that you should check in with a doctor, the only time my throat ever felt that bad it was a thrush infection (yeast related bacterial infection) it was HORRIBLE, but the antibiotics (I think it was just Amoxicillin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amoxicillin)) worked wonders and I was right as rain in a week or so.

Protein shakes and smoothies feel great, fill you up and provide great nutrition. Kashi Go Lean Protein Shake mix is pretty yummy. Hot tea works wonders for sore throats, too. My absolute favorite for the throat is Traditional Medicinals Throat Coat. Theraflu also makes some great throat tea, and it has pain relievers in it. Once you do have some sustenance in your belly, take a zinc. It will help you heal uber fast. Hope you feel better!
I would say soups, eggs and other soft, moist foods. Maybe apple sauce?
For sore throats I always put two spoonfuls of honey in hot water and sip that. It is soothing and honey supposedly has antibacterial quality. I've also heard lemon and water (maybe sweeten with honey??) is good too. If you still feel bad, go to the doctor. Hopefully it's not strep or anything. Hope you feel better soon!

Thanks for all of the suggestions and well wishes guys! My throat is beginning to feel a little better today, but I don't want to take any chances.
Luckily I found a few cups of the chicken noodle varienty of Campbells "Soup At Hand" in the cupboard last night. You were right cutie123, since the pieces were small enough for me to eat with minimal pain. :) I also found a bowl of vegan jello in the fridge, so I had some for breakfast and lunch.
Right now it's dinner time, so I may have either apple sauce or mashed potatoes. If I feel stronger tomorrow though(I've been in bed all day), I would love to have a smoothie. :p

I'm guess all your good wishes reached me, since I'm feeling almost completely better :). My throat doesn't feel inflammed anymore, although I do have a lingering pain in the back, and a cough. I don't want to press my luck though, so I'm sticking to soup, spaghetti, jello, smoothies, and other soft treats until I feel 100% again :)
