I was just at the doctor getting my blood drawn and fainting at the same time. I have a HORRIBLE needle-phobia. I warned the nurse who was taking my blood about my anxiety and I think she took it a bit lightly because after she drew my blood, the next thing i remember is 2 more nurses hovering around me, getting me to wake up.

Anyone else have some crazy phobias?

I have a fear of electrical outlets/plugging things and things exploding. Everytime I plug something in, I quickly push it in and step back. My sister is always teasing me how I think everything is going to explode.
When the news started showing footage of people on their cell phones combusting at gas stations when filling up their tanks, I freaked out. So it kind of scares me a bit now when I fill up.

I don't really think I have any true phobia, but the closest for me is probably heights.

That is the only thing I really have a uncontrolled panic attacky physical reaction too. For example, a few months ago my friend wanted to show me this cave up a really steep trail and I followed him, as always, thinking I would be fine. When I got the the top I just started sobbing/hyperventilating and felt like the world was going to tip and dump me off the cliff.

I've tried numerous times to 'conqueror' it, but I always end up embarrassing myself by freaking out, lol!

I don't know if this considered a phobia, but I cannot stand caterpillars. I can't even look at pictures or some cartoon ones, and just saying it already frightens me :(. I don't know why I'm like this, but I think I may be traumatized when I was a kid or something. It gives me the creeps.

The dark - you would think at 28 I would be over this, but no.

Clowns - Same as above.

Needle/Having blood drawn - Sewing, peircing and tat are fine. Take blood out of me and I might take a swing at you.

Phones - Don't know where this came from. Unless its my ex, my kids, my parents or my future husband I can not answer it. It terrifies me.

Heights - I've always been afraid of them. More so since my Mom told me that she started having dreams about me dying by going over a high bridge a couple years ago. Oddly enough, I am not afraid of bridges.

I was talking about this today with my mom. I'm afraid of the dark too but only if I'm alone and I start thinking. I tend to watch Ghost Hunters video evidence on Youtube right before bed. Then I start thinking about it and have to turn the tv on.:D

I'm deathly afraid of aliens. I believe this was because my parents used to let me watch X-files when I was younger. The people being abducted and even the drawings people make on those History Channel shows scare me. My heart starts pounding, I start to sweat, and I feel sick.

I feel the same about spiders and sharks. I can't even look at the tarantulas in the pet store. I refuse to go in the ocean or big bodies of water in general.

I believe I have Aeroacrophobia- Fear of open high places. I hate being in wide open spacious fields or meadows. It makes me feel vulnerable.

I have a phobia of balloons popping. I'm not sure why but it is absolutely terrifying for me if someone is playing with or going to pop a balloon. Someone said I might have ligyrophobia which is a fear of loud noises but I don't mind loud noises, just popping balloons!

I don't believe I have any true "phobias". I don't mind heights, I have no problem scooping up a spider and placing it outside, I've been in the ocean even though there've been 11 shark bites off our county's shore this year, and I can speak in public (I don't like it, lol, but for some reason I was on the varsity debate team in high school).

There are a lot of things I'm really uncomfortable with though. Like Laura said (yay for companionship) I haaaate talking on the phone unless it is with those I'm closest to. I even make DF order pizza :o

I also will not walk over grates in the sidewalk! I can remember back in 1st grade, walking from my elementary school to the church next door where my Brownie meetings were held, avoiding storm drains....for fear of what, I don't know, maybe it's "step on a crack break your mother's back" to the extreme, lol, I don't know, but I'm afraid of it either giving way, or me dropping my keys or jewelry, lol. People who know this about me think its fun to watch me walk, and laughing at me when I avoid the grates :)

I don't have true "phobias," but some things certainly scare me. I'm irrationally worried about walking by myself when it's dark out. So many people walk across campus at night but I get really scared and either take a bus or ask my boyfriend for a ride. I also check my backseat 10 times when I'm driving at night LOL, I convince myself someone's in my car.

I used to have some intense phobias, needles, guns, having my face cut...

now I'm more mellow (thank the gods for citalopram!)
my only real phobia now is losing my husband Adam.

A lot of things scare me (spiders, bugs, clowns, etc) but my one true phobia would be flying in an airplane. I get so anxious over it that I get panic attacks. I finally talked to the doctor about it, and he gave me anti-anxiety meds to take before I board a plane so I can calm down and sleep during the flight! Those pills are a Godsend!

Elevators, I will not get on one by myself. I'm also uncomfortable talking on the phone to people, with the exception of my fiancee and parents.

I haaaate talking on the phone. Even with those I'm closest too, I still hate it. I don't know why, but I get such anxiety over it, especially when it's talking to someone I don't know. It's kinda like I internally panic when I have to answer the phone. I hate it, and it sucks to have to psyche myself up to make a phone call, LOL.

Me too!! I absolutely cannot stand balloons popping, so I always avoid them as much as I can or I'll cover my ears.

I'm scare of clowns and deep ocean too.

I don't think I have any true phobias. But I don't like bugs and other creepy crawlies. Sometimes I'm afraid of the dark (e.g. after reading ghost stories and such). I used to be afraid of talking on the phone at work, but have long gotten past that. I think I just needed practice or something. I think it was just that I wasn't sure what to say and wanted to sound professional. And I always think I sound stupid leaving a voicemail (still do sometimes. lol!).

When I was little I used to be scared of really tall/big trees. My only explanation is that maybe something happened to me in a past life. lol. The fear eventually went away. It was never anything crippling though. Just heightened anxiety.

I don't know if it's really a phobia, but dogs kinda scare me, especially big ones. When I was little I was riding my bike, and my neighbor's dog decided to chase after me barking. I panicked and crashed, and the dog ran over and bit/scratched up my legs. They've freaked me out since then.

Spiders - I'm not deathly afraid, and I'm okay with killing them (if they're in a position where it's easy for me to squash them with my shoe, and I only like to use my shoe)

Toilets - I don't think anyone knows about this one, lol. I told my sister once. And of course it's a wierd phobia. I'm always afraid of a toilet being broken and overflowing. Not so much at home, but mostly with public restrooms or other people's bathrooms. Of course I've had toilets overflow on me ever since I was little, so that might be the trigger. If I'm in a public restroom, and no one's around, I'll open the stall door then flush the toilet, lol.

Swimming/drowning - I still don't know how to swim, and although I took swimming lessons in both high school and college, I was never able to learn. It's mostly because I'm really short, and I feel like I'll drown easily as opposed to taller people.

*Needles/getting blood drawn. I just hate this!
*Anastesia, I'm not sure if I spelled that right. I hate going to sleep during surgery. I'm always afraid of not waking up.

*Like Becky, I'm afraid of walking in complete darkness when I'm alone.

*Flying by myself. I wonder if the plane would crash and I'd never see my family again.

I think my only true fears are losing someone I love and natural disasters. I used to be terrified of lightening, & it still makes me nervous, but overall I've calmed down about alot of things as I've gotten older...ITA w/ Meagan though....thank God for Celexas :D

The garbage disposal freaks me out. I get anxious when I have to stick my hand in it to take something out of it. I always think it's going to turn on it's own and grind my hand up.

Suffocation, clowns, and germs.

I didn't realize how common the phone thing is. I'm the same exact way and pretty much always have been.

I used to hate needles but don't anymore. I don't like them or anything but I now I can even watch when they draw my blood and not really care. Though the needles they use for stitches I can do without for the rest of my life, those suckers hurt:(

I do HATE heights, water, bridges (back in elementary school we were learning...something (lol, yeah that lesson stayed with me really well) and the class went out on the bridge in back. It was one of those concrete ones overa ditch. The entire time we were on it it was swaying back and forth and scared me to death. Even before that I was always terrified of being on a bridge/or otherwise above stuff like that. I was always scared that what I was standing on would collapse and kill me. The last time I went to the beach with this old friend he made me walk along the pier and I was scared beyond belief.

I also hate boats. Not just because I hate water (that of course is part of it) but I just hate them for some reason.

Driving up mountain roads. I'm always worried we're going to go over the edge.

I also HATE HATE HATE total darkness. Though I think I have a good reason for that.

I used to be much worse though, I used to not like leaving the house if no one else was home because I was terrified there would be a fire but I've gotten over that.

LOL, I hated those as a child. Even worse was my fear of those people in the big character costumes. I had a birthday party at Chuck E Cheese once and hid from Chuck under the table. I was crying so much this big guy at the next table told him to go pick on someone his own size.

Though I was an odd child. I used to take the legs off my barbies when I left the room so they couldn't come get me.

Oh and one I still kinda have is clowns. I was always scared of them and seeing Poltergeist when I was little didn't make that one any better.

Mushrooms, like the wild ones that grow in ground which tend to be especially prevalent after lots of rain. I can't bear the thought getting too close or touching them. The shape, color and potential to be poisonous freak me out. I use to feel the same way about cooked mushrooms but its becoming less of a issue as I get older.

Me too! Unfortunately my grandma decided when I was born I was going to start collecting those things so I have like 100 or so (in storage) that she has sent me over the years. Yikes!

My biggest fear is heights. A couple of weeks ago I couldn't even climb the pull-down ladder to my sister-in-law's attic without freaking out. I never made it past the fourth step. I even hate standing on a regular step-stool. Therefore I am not a fan of going on airplanes either. Airplanes give my husband anxiety too, so we prefer to cruise or drive to our vacation destinations.

I'm also afraid of most insects, especially centipedes (those ugly long bugs with 100 legs). Just thinking about them gives me the heebie-jeebies, and when I see one I freak out!

My third fear is driving. I haven't driven since I was 16 when I got into an accident while my father was letting me practice with his car before going for my permit. I do have my license, and I've driven my husband's car around parking lots, but I've never made it out of those lots and onto the road. I'm hoping someday I'll get over this fear, but I honestly don't know if I ever will.

Erica, I'm the same way. I got stung for the first time ever when I sat on one last summer in a bikini (yeah, my butt sure hurt LOL) and I'm still freaked out about bees.

ILYF
05-20-2008, 01:36 PM
Yeah usually that's the only time a bee will sting you is if you step on one or sit on one. They are not aggressive. Now yellow jackets on the other hand...stay the heck away from their little holes or they will come get you. But bees....I used to be an avid gardener when I had a yard:( and I'd be all around them and I never once got stung.
