View Full Version : Why do some products work great for about 2 weeks, and then quit giving results???

Does this happen to anyone but me??? The most recent product to die on me is Neutrogena Rapid Clear. It worked fantastic for a couple of weeks; each time I used it, the next morning my skin was noticeably better. Now, nothing. It makes little difference, if any at all. It's as if my skin adapts very quickly to something, then ignores it. Sort of like how we hear bacteria get used to antibiotics and then the antibiotics are no longer effective against it.
There's a whole list of products that have done this over the years; I don't even remember all of them. But I am so sick of finding fantastic 'holy grails' just for them to kick the bucket on me a short while later.

This has happened to me with Certain Dri. The first few years, I never, ever sweated. Now it still works a little but not nearly as good as it use too. : (

Yep! Clean & Clear Dual-Action Moisturizer was like this for me, as was BE RareMinerals Cleanser  My hair seems to "adapt" to shampoos really quickly too! Maybe it's just body chemistry?

I've noticed this happens to me a lot too.
I haven't got a clue why.

I wonder if skin can get "used" to something so that it doesn't produce the same results. For me, I tend to have to use something for a good two weeks before I see results. I just bought the Clearasil Ultra Daily Face Wash, and the first week results weren't good at all, but I stuck with it and *now* see results. Everyone must be different!

I have a theory, I suppose...
You know how your vision is very dark when you first shut off the lights and then in a couple of minutes your eyes adjust? I think after a couple of weeks, your body adjusts and learns how to work around the product instead of with it.
Have you tried stopping the product for awhile and then restarting, or rotating it with other products?
I definitely have to rotate shampoos, moisturizers, and acne products.

Was the Rapid Clear their 2% beta hydroxy acid (Rapid Clear Acne Defense Face Lotion or 3-in-1 Hydrating Treatment)? If so, it may have done all the exfoliating it can do, since skin only has so many dead cells on it. I agree that stopping and then restarting the product is a good idea.
Yeah...I've had that happen. :( I recently got the Lumene Energy Cocktail and loved it initially. But then it seemed to be too heavy or something. So I only use it on occasion when I need a little more moisturizing. It could be the change in the weather though. I had the Radiant C-Energy moisturizer from Lumene last year and it seemed to lose it's effectiveness over time and did not seem weather related. Right now I've rediscovered a travel sized Aveda sensitive sking moisturizer that my skin is loving at the moment. If only we didn't have to rotate! My wallet would be happier. lol.
A little off topic but...one thing I noticed recently is how much a difference my skin could be in a different location. In Boston, I have less than ideal skin (oily/combo with dry skin patches and occasional breakout). During my recent trip to Maui, I was slathering on heavy sunscreen and using minimal products and my skin was happy. Not too oily, no dry patches. Just nice (for once!). My SIL complains about her skin every time she visits us here...so there must be something in the air and maybe the water that is messing us up!
