View Full Version : Beauty Product flashbacks

Since this is the Mature Beauty section...I'm assuming posters here are a *little* older. I'm 37. I was having flashbacks today of some beauty products from back in "the day".

Tickle anti-perspirant. I used this all the time. It was my first-ever anti-P. Does anyone know or remember if this was marketed to the teen crowd, or to all women?

I remember when the nail polish pens were the new "in" thing when I was in high school (1980's). I had several. They were crap...but it was so cool to paint your nails so quickly and easily in studyhall.

"Gee Your Hair Smells Teriffic" shampoo. I used this all the time. It was marketed heavily to teens...and it did smell really good. I first tried it when I got a sample in some teen kit/gift bag in health class...7th grade. I don't remember there being a conditioner that went with the shampoo. I remember this made my hair really greasy and heavy...but it did smell good.

My mom made me get my long hair cut short in 5th grade. I was in protest. SHe bought me a bottle of "Short & Sassy" shampoo to make me feel better. Dorothy Hamill was the spokesperson.

I remember laying out in the sun when it was still "okay". My mom had a bottle of suntan lotion (SPF 6). We didn't know what SPF was then. I covered myself in suntan lotion and was PO'd BIG TIME because the SPF prevented me from getting fried. My mom explained SPF and I couldn't comprehend why anyone would try to prevent a tan. If anyone would have told me back then I'd be wearing SPF 30 some day...Id' have told them they were insane.

Anyone have any other products & stories to add?

I remember wanting those roll on lip glosses back when i was in elementary school (a clear sign of makeup-junkie-to-be. LOL!). They came in a clear tube/bottle and you can see it's really liquidy and when you roll it on your lips it was really shiny. I believe it smelled like bubble gum...but my memory gets a little fuzzy (probably because I never got one). This was probably back in the 80s.

There was also yummy scented lip gloss that I think were from Maybelline. By this time I think I was in middle school/high school. They were packaged in really cute pastel little tubes with a rounded dome-like cap. I think one of the flavors was strawberry swirl or something like that. I just remembered they looked really cute in the pink tubes and the flavors were very yummy.

One of my favorite memories was way back in elementary school (1st grade??). My mom bought some sort of moisturizer from a friend selling Avon or Mary Kay or something (I think Mary Kay most likely) and I loved it so much, I kept raving about it to my friends. I kept telling them it "smells just like roses." lol. I wish I knew what it was, because I still like the scent. Occasionally I'd get a whiff of something very similar and it takes me right back. :)

For hair care, I remember Salon Selectives were big during high school. Customized hair care. :) I also really liked Finesse shampoo (loved the scent too).

Sounds like Maybelline Kissing Potion and Kissing Koolers! I'm older than either of you (41), there are a whole bunch of products I remember (usually silly, sometimes good though).

Tickle was marketed toward all women. I tried the Citrus one and the floral one (pink). Also...

* Faberge Organics shampoo (I told two friends, they told two friends...) The shampoo itself was quite astringent iirc and smelled good.
* Coty stick blush and lipstick...starts out white  then magically changes to your perfect blush/lip shade...not.
* Bonne Bell Ten-o-Six lotion. This actually tinted your face a little "tan."
* Sea Breeze astringent
* Noxema cleanser, the white creamy one that smelled like cloves
* Heaven Scent (the original one)
* Body on Tap shampoo, Tame Clean Rinse, Flex shampoo & conditioner, Breck with the Breck Girls, original green Clairol Herbal Essence shampoo...
* Pantene back when it was expensive. Don't hate me because I'm beautiful!
* Ginormous Bonne Bell Lipsmackers...they came out with the "little" ones only later.
* Charlie perfume, Babe perfume
* eyeshadow to match eye color

Those are some good ones! I remember the kissing potions. I was in grade school when the girls starting coming in with those. I begged my mom for one, and she said I would probably start kissing boys...so I didn't get one. My best friend gave me one of hers secretly. I hit it from my mom and used it all the time. It was mint.

I remember in Jr. High...everyone wore Love's Baby Soft perfume. I still see those around in gift sets during the holidays. I always want to get one and smell it for nostalgic purposes...but they are always packed up tight in pretty gift boxes.

YES!!! Kissing Koolers!! It was driving me nuts that I couldn't remember it because it's something i actually bought. lol.

I also had the Coty blush/lipstick thing which not only didn't work, but also smelled kind of weird.

I used Noxema for the longest time to combat acne. And I've tried Sea Breeze (very drying!). I might even have gotten a bottle of Heaven Scent. I think it was from one of the Secret Santa things. But I didn't wear perfum back then so I don't know what happened to it. I did owna Love's Baby Soft (begged my mom to get it for me when I was about 9. lol). I don't remember wearing it, but I loved the scent. I think I sprayed it on everything but me. lol.

Oh, this brings back so many memories when I just bought products without the benefit of icompact. lol.

I also remember the ginormous Lip Smackers. Except I was pretty young and so I'm not 100% sure it was Lip Smackers, specifically. I just remembered these huge lip balms that smell very yummy. A girl in my class had one...but I remember she actually ate hers!

Wanna go way, way back? The first lip gloss that I ever remember seeing marketed was by Yardley of London in the mid-sixties and was just called Lip Gloss. They also had a white frosted one. Yardley was absolutely huge then. They were a very old English company mostly known for their English Lavendar Soap. It still smells good. I found some at a dollar store recently! Anyways, in the day, the company updated their products and packaging, launched a huge advertising campaign with one of the very first super-models, Jean Shrimpton, as their spokesmodel and became one of the biggest cosmetics companies in history. Jean Shrimpton was every where you looked. Wonder What ever became of her ? She was very beautiful.:) I just remembered: The Yardley lip gloss was called Lip Slicker! This thread is so much fun!

Wow, that's pretty interesting. I do see yardley in the drug stores and always wondered about them. :) I also looked up Jean Shrimpton and yes, very pretty! I guess she owns a hotel with her husband now.

Ah yes, Jean Shrimpton and Yardley makeup. Remember the Mary Quant stuff too? I thought I was being SO mod! Yikes! The white lips and dark eyes ...

My first lipstick was a frosted Pink Pearl from the Pond's makeup line - Angel something? My first lipgloss was a Max Factor stick gloss from WAY back when.

I wore Charlie for YEARS and the Maybelline Kissing Potion - strawberry was my favorite flavor. I actually wore this until just a few years ago.

CrystesMom

Red, I do indeed remember Mary Quant and the whole mod look! I can't believe we actually wore those colors! The Pond's makeup line was Angel Face. Talk about cheap! You could buy it in any dimestore. (Remember those?) :D Oh, yes, those were the days! Remember the Cutex line and EggGrog Grog lipstick? Man, it tasted good!

Ah yes Angel Face and Cutex! Never had Eggnog flavored liptstick - now watch! Maybelline will come out with a Shinylicious in eggnog flavor this Xmas!

CrystesMom

Cutex had this at Christmas, too, AIR. They also had one called Peppermint Stick--one of those horrible white- pale pinks! Ughhh! There were others in the collection, but their names escape me.;)

There is some good stuff mentioned here already!

Few more I thought of:

Suave made a shampoo scented in "Honeysuckle". I don't recall if they had a matching conditioner or not...I'm assuming they did but maybe my mom never bought that. It was typical Suave quality. The smell was AMAZING. Flowery fresh, but not too floral or funeral-like. Anyway, the last time I recall using it was in about 1987-88. When I went away to college in 1988, I looked for it in stores, and have never seen it since. Yes, I still keep my eye out for it 18 years later. I should send Suave and email about this.

Do they still have Dial-a-Lash mascara? I think it was by Maybelline...correct me if I'm wrong. The tube had a dial on the end from 1-10 and you could adjust it to make your lashes thicker or thinner. I tried this once and tossed it after a week. The dial was hokey and didn't change anything.

I also remember the days before the feminine pads had wings. They were all so thick, bulky, and messy. I ended up using tampons...not because I wanted to shove anything up there...but because the pads were so out of control. Then we had the big Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) scare in the 1980's which resulted in all the warnings on the tampon boxes today.

*Gee Your Hair Smells Teriffic- When I was little my grandma washed & conditioned my hair with this.

*Love's Baby Soft- I got that one Christmas.

*Bonnie Bell Lip Smackers- mostly the small ones but one Christmas they bought back the big one in a Christmas flavor Plum Pudding. My favorite is Dr. Pepper.

*Jean na Ta after bath splash ( I know I'm spelling it wrong but I remember the commericals)

*When I was little there was commerical for a perfume and a song played that went something like I bring home the bacon fry it up in a pan and never let you forget you're a man because I'm a woman. I think that was a Revlon product.

*I will never forget the Calgon take me away commericals. It's amazing how long commericals stick with you but that's why they show them over and over so you'll remember.

*Seabreeze for my oily skin.

*Salon Selectives- I never used it.

*Maybelline Dail-A-Lash. They no longer make it but I remember the commerical LOL! They had two sisters the older sister want thick dramactic lashes so she dailed up. The little sister wanted a more natural look so she dailed down.

MJ

*Maybelline Kissing Potions. In elementry shcool the girls used to pile it on. Our teachers made two girls take it off. She told them that girls who wear lipgloss tto young end up getting pregent.

*I remember the big TSS scare it was on the news. By the time I got my first period ultra thins had already come out. If I remember right the women were wearing tampons to bed at night and that's why they got sick. Correct me if I'm wrong.

*Does anyone remember cream deoderant. They came in little glass jars. Secret and Tussy made they. A couple weeks ago I saw a cream deorant form another brand. You could have knocked me over with a feather. I thought those were long gone. I barely remember Tickle I'm not sure who it was marketed to.

*Hello Kitty lipgloss my grandma got this for me at a upscale department store in our area. I went to TBS yesterday and their Vanilla Spice smells just like it.

MJ, the Jean Nate was very lightly lemon-y and smelled very fresh. It was really nice! The Revlon perfume in the commercial was called Enjoli.:)

I do remember the citrus scent of Jean Nate. It came in a yellow bottle with a black top and lettering. Enjoli yep that it :D !.

They still sell that Jean Nate after-bath splash in drug stores. I never used it, but all my friends did. I should go smell it sometime.

Yes, the TSS was from women leaving the tampons in too long before changing them. I'll have to go read more about TSS on the web just out of curiosity.

I TOTALLY remember the Enjoli commercials. LOL! Cause I'm a woooooo-man!

I don't know if they still sell this anymore, but there was a hand/body lotion called Rose Milk. It smelled just like roses. My grandma always had that sitting out in her bathroom, but never used it. When I was in college, my best friend found Rose Milk in a drugstore and used it. I remember the lotion was watery...and that rose scent was palatable for about 15 minutes.

I loved Salon Selectives in high school! I wish they'd bring it back. I also remember Bonne Bell Lip Smackers in the jumbo size when I was little. I remember seeing the Kissing Potions too! I hated the Bonne Bell Ten-o-Six astringent! My mom gave that to me for Christmas in high school. It made my skin break out more and it smelled very very bad. My older sisters used Sea Breeze and Noxema on their skin.

I think I had a bottle of Jean Nate when I was younger. I totally forgot about that! Of course, I don't remember what it smelled like at all. It was another Christmas Secret Santa thing. lol.

I vaguely remember Rose Milk. I might have actually bought one from Rite Aid a long time ago. I just remember it smelling like roses. I did a quick search and they still sell it at drugstore.com. :)

Sounds like Maybelline Kissing Potion

I did a google search on this stuff this evening and this is how I found this message board. I hope this is allowed, but I was at Dollar Tree today and they had a sloo of this stuff. But warning, I think its about 5 years old. I remember this stuff making a brief comeback in 2001.

There is a similar one on the makeup page, I think. I posted there about some Yardley products. Anyone remember the Yardley eyeshadows in the metal paint boxes? You applied them with a wet brush.

Does anyone remember the orange lipstick that used to change color to suit y our complexion? (Yeah, right!)

I'll be traveling in southern England in May; I'll have to look for Jean Shrimpton's hotel in Penzance. We are renting a cottage not too far from there.

ConnieVanDelayShow, welcome! I'm from Portsmouth, but live in Fredericksburg now.

Oh yes, the mood lipstick...who can forget that. Wow this thread is taking me back. Also, the Coty Wild musk perfume....God I wish I could remember more. I don't know why, but I could never bring myself to buying anything called a Lip Smacker - sounds like it would hurt! :D

However I did see a bodacious display of Revlon's Charlie fragrance out for Christmas and even tried some on. Boy did THAT bring back some memories! I think I wore that all through high school.

OMG this is the best thread!! I remember EVERYTHING everyone's mentioned. But I can't believe no one brought up Village Bath Lip Lickers. Those were THE things to have. They came in a little tin w/ a sliding lid.

I used to always wear a cologne called Blue Jeans - it kind of smelled like Ambush, before they reformulated Ambush. Of course I went through Love's Baby Soft and Babe too. Love's had 2 other scents I really liked, Musky Jasmine & Rain Scent. I need to see if I can find them.

Rose Milk is THE grandma scent! They still sell it at small local non-chain drugstores.

And this is older than me, but my mom used to use a shampoo called Vita-Fluff. I just love the name - so 1950s. :)

I remember most of this stuff so far. OMG, it takes me back! Ah, nostalgia....

There's something that's been driving me crazy, though. In the late '70's or early '80's, there was a drugstore lipstick that has long since been discontinued. I've been trying like hell to remember what it was called. I want to say it was Color___ or ____Color. There were these two-page magazine ads featuring women wearing this lipstick in bright red shades and so forth.... I think they came in a transparent tube. Does anyone have the foggiest clue what I'm talking about? I'll be ever so relieved if so. :)

Does anyone remember belted pads by Kotex? My mom used those. She didn't like maxi pads or ulta thins.

Did anyone else play with the Clarion makeup computer at drugstores and does anyone remember Natural Wonder or something like that.

Gayle0000
12-27-2006, 07:17 PM
I forgot about about the Clarion. I used a few things when I was in college and I don't recall anything being particularly good. That was one of the first little computer-analysis things you did by telling it what your coloring was, etc. Very innovative at the time. Very cheesy now that I think back to it.

I saw a thread on the skincare board (I think) about the buf-puf. I remember when those were new on the market. My grandpa worked for 3M, and got a ton of those as gift/marketing supplies. They were SO HARSH on the skin, but I remember actually believing the harder I scrubbed my face with that, the more my zits would go away. Ugh.

MJ
12-28-2006, 09:06 AM
How could I forget Buf-Puf. The same here, I thought the harder I scurb the better my skin would be. You are right it was very harsh on the skin. I'm not sure how to spell it but do you remember Apari Apricot Scrub? This was out years before St. Ives at least in my area.

Gayle0000
12-29-2006, 08:38 AM

Colorplus? (Almay's old line)

I actually remember WEARING belted pads. One thing I am not in the least nostalgic about - they were a pain in the butt! (no pun) My mom never wore anything else, though.

I still remember my mom would get the Buf-Puf after me growing up because my glasses would leave those nasty green spots on my nose pores. I remember she'd buy the pack of the little square ones you only used once. I do remember the big teardrop shaped one though.

OMG...speaking of the belted pads...I never wore them, but I remember in 5th Grade, the girls went in 1 room and the boys went in another room at school. The girls got the "talk" about our periods. My 5th grade teacher (a female...and OLD) did the girls and she actually put on a pad with a belt over the top of her own clothes/pants!!!!! I can still see that scene play in my head like it happenned yesterday. That was in about 1978.

The worst part was my own mom hadn't told me about periods yet...in fact, I'm 37 yrs old and she still has never had that talk with me...lol! I was mortified and in shock for several weeks after that.

MJ
01-08-2007, 12:50 PM
LOL:) ! My mom had the talk about periods with me when I was 7 or 8. She started her period young about 10 1/2 or 11 So, she wanted me to be prepared. I was really surprised that belted pads stayed on the market so long.
The last time I saw them was in 2000. I thought they would have stop selling them long before that.

Does anyone remember Flame Glow? It was the lipstick that had the balm or gloss in the middle and color surrounded it in the tube. I used see ads for it in Seventeen all the time.

TheConnieVandelayShow
01-08-2007, 06:18 PM
Was it in a silver tube with a long clear cap for the tube? My mom had a tube of this stuff that I took from her when I was 12 (I mean come on, the stuff had to be 15+ years old by then) but I lost it on the bus a few weeks later I'm sure.

CrystesMom

I remember Flame-Glo Lipstick from waaaaaay back! As for belted pads..... ugh! They were the worst! When I was in JR high and high school, if you got your period unexpectedly during the school day, you had to go to the home economics classroom and buy one of these things. You did not even get the belt... you got two safety pins with it. It was all contained in a little paper bag that you then carried back through the halls to the girls room while everyone who saw you snickered! In my little hick town, NO ONE used tampons for fear that everyone would think you had already had sex! We're talking mid-sixties here! Parents were convinced that using tampons meant you could not possibly be a virgin, so you dared not use them! I actually remember an instance in which a store clerk called one brave girl's parents be cause she bought a box of Tampax. They were terribly bulky and difficult to use at the time, anyway. Thank goodness, things are so much better now!

Gayle0000
01-10-2007, 03:13 PM
I also grew up in a small hick town. I went thru Jr High and HS in the 1980's. We had the same Tampon="sleeps around" attitude.

I bought my first box of tampons in secret (meaning I didn't tell my mom) in a city 40 minutes away from my hometown. That seems so silly now...but it was what had to be done for the time and place I was at.

MJ
01-11-2007, 08:52 AM
Flame Glow was in a silver tube with a clear top. I can't believe what some you had to go through when dealing with your periods. When I got mine my grandma bought me a frist period kit that Stayfree was offering at the time. My family and even elementary school were so open about it. Nothing to be amashed or scare of just a normal part of growing up. I did live in a medium sized city and it was the early-mid 80's.

Oh, I loved the Lip Lickers! I only had a small one (bubble gum flavor) a friend had a big one w/ two flavors--I was so jealous (LOL!)

I forgot about Flame Glo; didn't the company try another line several years later-Naturistics or something like that?

This thread is great! :)

Yep, I knew it had Natural in the name. Natural Wonder and Electric Youth. Which leads to to anther question. Does perfume have an expiration date? I read articles that talk about how long to hang on to make up but I have never read anything about fragrance. I remember some posters on MUA saying they have keep some of their fragrances for 10 years plus and they still smell good.

Well, my mom has a bottle of white shoulders she bought in the early 90's that still has a scent to it.

My Bath & Body works stuff from 1998, 1999+ still smell as well. And my bottle of Tommy Girl still smells.

Oh and I can't forget all those Avon bottles that looked like dolls and mice getting married, they still smelled too even if they were empty.

MJ, there was a line called Naturistics! That stuff sucked! I can't specifically remember what all I had, but I remember I liked the packaging as a teen. Products were crap.

I also remember Natural Wonder. That sucked too.

I wanted Electric Youth so bad & never got it. My best friend wore it, and I never really liked the smell...I just wanted it for the image. I think I want Debbie Gibson's CD...that one with her sitting on the floor, white background, big hole in the knee of her jeans with a smiley face colored on her knee. That one had a ton of hits on it. Putting that on my shopping list.

Shake your love...I just can't shake your love...

I hated the Bonne Bell Ten-o-Six astringent! My mom gave that to me for Christmas in high school. It made my skin break out more and it smelled very very bad.
UGH I remember that stuff... *shudders* made me break out too... maybe that's why it went away? *laughs*

Does anyone remember the orange lipstick that used to change color to suit y our complexion? (Yeah, right!)

Oh yes, the mood lipstick...who can forget that. Wow this thread is taking me back.

Ahhh! Mood lipsticks!
You remember Wet and Wild's version? I had the blue one that turned BRIGHT pink... sick... *cringe*

Oh Oh!
When I was in the 8th grade, sparkly nail colours were all the rage, you remember the ones... with the HUGE sparkles that hardly came out of the bottles? I've seen them since but only in like 'little girl' cosmetics kits. *laughs*

They made my nails feel all... gritty... yuck.

One of the hologram ones I had was kinda neat though, think I used it more on binder covers than my nails... ;)

We were all about the chunky glitter polishes in middle school too (96-98). Everyone had to wear uniforms so nails were one of the few outlets of expression (besides you socks) I remember I use to wear hideously dark, matte and gloopy polishes from Wet n Wild but the glitters were my favorite.

I saw "Saved" (movie) a few years ago and chuckled because the main character in a catholic middle school painted her fingernails really dark crazy colors too.

I was all about the chunk nail polishes, too. I remember having a clear one with glitter and these metallic green stars, and I had a Valentine's Day polish, that was clear with glitter and red and pink hearts. LOL the innocent days of middle school...

I was at wal mart and I noticed that Cover Girl makes one gloopy clear glitter shade still. I might have to pick it up!

Anybody remember Apple brand nail polish (they may of made other cheap make up items too)? I remember my mom got like a 12 pack of the stuff at a Phar-Mor in the late 80's and gave the glitter shade to my half sister.

I remember Buff Puffs, Jean Nate, Love's Baby Soft, mood lipstick, Kissin' Koolers, giant Lip Smackers, Dial A Lash mascara, Noxema, Ten-0-Six, all that stuff! One of my first makeup purchases was that roll-on lip gloss that came in a glass tube. I hated the smell of Electric Youth perfume. One girl used to corner other girls in the bathroom at school and spray it on them.

I don'T have the patience to go back and read this entire thread right now, so this may have been mentioned...but have we all used Love's Baby Soft perfume at one point in our teens???

I remember I wanted the original scent and the rain scent for xmas. I ended up with the Lemon scent and was PO'd BIG TIME!!!!

I just found this thread and went down memory lane! I remember Yardley, Heaven Sent, and also remember Cachet? It supposedly smelled different on everyone who wore it. Also, who can forget Halo shampoo ? That had the greatest scent ever, I can still imagine it.
In the Department store, gone but not forgotten: Helena Rubenstein, Ultima II (loved that Brand), Germaine Monteil, Charlie by Revlon cosmetics, Frances Denney Herbesscence perfume (think that was the name) Monteil Trade Secret perfume, Rubenstein Skin Life cosmetic line and my first moisturizer was called Moisture Response by Rubenstein I think! Anyone remember any of these? These products were around during my first exciting forays into the Department Store cosmetics department with my mom -- Oh, also Charles of the Ritz in the pink and black boxes!

FreshRoses
03-05-2007, 11:57 AM
I actually used to sell "Princess Marcella Borghese" along with several other high end lines like Erno Laszlo and Dior. That line deteriorated down to just the fango mud products in recent years in only a few select stores but I haven't seen in at all lately.

Speaking of Borghese, it must still be around in some form or another because I believe the latest "Bacheleor" was Prince Borghese of the cosmetic line fortune!

Gayle0000

Oooooh. Thanks for the info Roses! I know Fango was their big product, but it's something I never tried...my skin is too dry for mud & clay masks. I tried a lot of other skincare from Borghese and liked them a lot. Never loved them enought to keep re-purchaseing, though. Good info!!

OK I don't know which of those pics I love more, the mice getting married by the TAB can or the Flame Glo next to the "Great smell of BRUT" ad.

Love's Rain Scent & Musky Jasmin were wonderful. Gayle0000, if you like lemon, try 4711. You can find it at Sears or Eckerd. It's in the men's dept but is really unisex and doesn't have that sort of weird undertone that Jean Nate has.

It's amazing how few cosmetic products there were when I was a kid (I'm 44) compared to how many there are today!

♥My very first memory of wearing make-up is a tube of Cutex lipstick in a light frosted peachy color. I remember brushing my hair forward and flinging it back(it was all one length and long) and looking at how hot I looked in the mirror with my peach lipstick...HEEHEE!!!!:D Jeez...how corny...I was probably 8 yrs. old....hahah! I still remember the smell of that lipstick...I loved it!

~I was just thinking about Dial a Lash mascara a few days ago...I actually liked it...well it's not like there was all that many to choose from "back in the day".

:( I still miss L'Oreal Colour Supreme lipstick...it was the one that didn't smell. I wore Colour Rich but then realized the Supreme one was better...I guess I was the only one that realized it? HA!

~Everything else I could think of was already named...this really brings back some nice memories of a fun and much simpler time!

L'oreal Colour Supreme was better. I remember when they discounted it a replaced it with a light weight formula. Can't remember the name . I was so disapppointed:(. It was nowhere near as good. Rum Rasin was my favorite Colour Supreme shade.

CLEARASIL AND CUTICURA!!! I used to pile this on any zit I had at night and then wake up the next morning all crusty! EWWWWWW!!! Then they came out with clear colored Clearasil.

I loved Bonne Bell products, that's when they made all the facial stuff as well. And the pink tape we would put on our bangs to keep them straight while we slept!!

Sponge rollers, lipstick trees - my older sister had one of these, I would try every color when she wasn't around.

Fran Wilson Mood Matcher lipsticks-gosh, these were so drying and awful, but I thought they were the greatest things ever at the time.

Bonne Bell Ten-O-Six Astringent-ouch, and I still remember the smell too. I was in Kroger today and came across a huge bottle of Ten-O-Six Shower Gel. I wonder if it smells the same, but I'm too chicken to try it out. :)

The original Wet n' Wild lipsticks in the white packaging, and the nail polishes in the square bottles. First makeup I ever bought.

Bonne Bell also had a line aimed at older teens, the name escapes me. It was all packaged in black, and they had "lip sheers" in slim tubes, lipsticks, etc. They also had a collection of scents in small spritz bottles named after moods. The "Flirty" one smelled amazing, and there were a couple of others that I can't remember.

OH and yeah, now that you mention it I do remember the tube of Prell.

This isn't a make-up but does anyone remember those "K-nockers"? They were two big marbles on a string and you knocked them together. The word at the time was they'd shatter and put your eye out? I just had the best time reading through these posts--I think I remember just about everything mentioned (I'm 33). Something I remember but don't think was mentioned was the Maybelline colored mascaras in the light purple tubes (can't think of any specific "line" from the brand that these were); I had yellow, pink, purple, blue, etc. I also had these great Maybelline eyeshadow quads w/ the marbled (or "speckled") colors in them--these were sooo cute!!

My most nastalgic cologne is Jontue; my wonderful aunt who got me into makeup at the tender age of 4 wore this all the time. She passed away when I was 6, but I think about her so often when I am hauling and talking make-up. I think we would be best buddies if she was alive today. :)

Also, remember those makeup "clubs" that were popular in the 80's? You would fill out the form with your favorite colors and send a few dollars to get a collection of makeup and none of the colors were ever your favorite ones and were pretty crappy products at that!

I don't remember anyone except for my 85 year old Mom saying cream rinse. It's probably more regional...

maureenann1962
09-27-2007, 08:17 AM
Wow, this brings back memories. I remember when conditioner was called creme rinse. Tame was the brand that comes to mind. I remember Glynnis O'Connor doing the TV commercials where she'd smear a bunch of it on a sheet of glass saying "you're looking at my hair through a creme rinse" to emphasize how it didn't leave any residue. It didn't leave a film on glass, but it sure did on my hair.

I remember my first makeup purchase was an eyeshadow from Coty. It was in a sphere shaped container and you had to unscrew the two halves to get to the product. The line was called "The Thing" and the shade I bought was called Iced Blue. Blech! What was I thinking? The Thing was also available in cream blushes and lip glosses. Cute packaging, horrid product.

I remember Tigress perfume. They also made two other scents in the Fabrege line called Aphrodisia and Woodhue. Woodhue didn't smell too bad, but Tigress & Aphrodisia smelled awful.

Tickle anti-perspirant was all the rage among my friends. We'd proudly display the cool bottles on our dressers because the packaging was so neat. I actually liked the pink one - wish they still made it.

Body on Tap shampoo was big among my friends, too. It was supposedly made with beer to give your hair more body. I don't remember it doing anything spectacular - it just cleaned my hair.

Earth Born shampoos & conditioners were awesome! They came in four fragrances - Apricot, Green Apple, Avocado, and Strawberry. Loved the scents and the cool apothecary-shaped bottles. Another product that died too young :(

Revlon used to make a line of cosmetics geared towards teenagers - Natural Wonder? Natural Essence? Something like that. The cream eyeshadow was like latex paint. Once you applied it, it was there to stay. Soap & water wouldn't take it off. I swear it stayed on my lids for 3 days.

Other beauty trends I remember from the late 70s . . .

Anyone remember the "Sunny's Star" necklace sold by Avon? Apparently Sunny Stevens - then spokeswoman for Avon cosmetics - supposedly designed the necklace. It was nothing fancy - just a cutout shape of a star worn on a short chain - but eveyone HAD to have one at my high school. You were very uncool if you didn't wear one. Might have been a regional thing, but I remember the craze like it was yesterday. I also remember saving my babysitting money like a miser in order to buy one.

The double-wrap disco belt. Nothing more than a double length of super thin leather worn as a belt. You looped the second length low - preferably worn over skin-tight Sasson jeans.

Original Candie's slide shoes. 4 inches of deat-defying plastic heels held on to your feet by a mere strap of leather. My school actually banned them because so many girls were tripping on the stairs while wearing them.

Gayle0000
09-27-2007, 03:31 PM
Speaking of Avon...does anybody remember the "Sweet Honesty" perfume? That was a must-have where I came from.

I didn't have those Candies originals (too high of a heel/too young)...but remember when everyone wore the original Dr. Scholl's sandals. Their big claim was how they made your calves/legs super toned & slim the more you wore them because of the movements of your feet with each step. I had a pair in brown.

I can't even remember what shampoo and conditioner I used to use in highschool? I'm blank! I can remember some products from the 70s but I can't remember what I used. What were the common hair products of the late 70s?

My neighbor used Tame Creme Rinse...I still remember how that smelled. (BTW, I think creme rinse & conditioner are slightly different, but I couldn't tell you how.)

Wella Balsam (Gap Earth perfume, now discontinued, smells like it)
Herbal Essence (the original green one, not the ones from the 80s with the bizarre fruit flavors or the "organic experience" ones of late)
Faberge Organics (I told 2 friends, etc etc)

Oh, and the Revlon cosmetics were called Natural Wonder.

*Does anyone from the Western Pa/West VA area remember HEALTH MART? The best drugstore ever...EVER!! I think Thrift Drug bought them out.
